This Is Not a Government Office or Directory Service. We run a private reference site. We cannot place calls, change directory listings, verify caller identity, or issue official directory information. For any of those, you need to reach the right office or carrier directly. For emergencies, dial 911. For a mental-health or suicidal crisis, dial 988.

Need a Specific Phone Number?

Here is where the numbers people ask us about in North Carolina actually come from:

  • Government numbers: see the North Carolina state and city staff directories. The state employee search on NC.gov is the statewide starting point. Raleigh answers general questions at 919-996-3000, and Cary's main town number is 919-469-4000. Note that 311 is not a statewide service here. It works only where a local government runs one, which in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County means 311 inside the county or 704-336-7600 outside it.
  • School and campus numbers: see the North Carolina school and campus directories. The state education department answers at 984-236-2100, and its EDDIE database returns the phone number for any public school. The NC State operator is 919-515-2011.
  • Public utility numbers: see North Carolina utility phone numbers. Emergency lines are separate from customer service. A gas smell goes to Piedmont Natural Gas at 800-752-7504 or to 911, not to the billing line. Before you dig, call 811 or 800-632-4949 and wait three full working days.
  • Public safety numbers: see North Carolina public safety phone numbers. Dial 911 for an emergency and 988 for a crisis. Highway Patrol communications in Raleigh answers at 800-662-7956, and Emergency Management operations at 800-858-0368.
  • Health and social services: see health and social services in North Carolina. The state health department customer service center is 800-662-7030. For food, housing, and utility help, dial 211 or 888-892-1162 to reach NC 211.
  • Public records requests: state agencies handle records under North Carolina's public records law, and a request goes to the agency holding the record rather than to a central office. Birth, death, and marriage certificates come from state Vital Records at 919-733-3000, or from the register of deeds in the county where the event happened. Divorce certificates come from the clerk of court where the case was filed. Court records route through the county courthouse, and central court administration answers at 919-890-1000.
  • Area code reference: see North Carolina phone area codes. Ten codes serve the state, and every local call needs all ten digits.
  • Phone code reference (N11, star codes, +1): see North Carolina phone codes
  • Reverse-lookup for an unknown caller: see reverse-lookup channels
  • Reporting a scam or robocall: see how to report scam calls. The state robocall hotline is 844-866-7626 and the consumer protection line is 877-566-7226.
